Senior Technical Expert – Industrial Automation (Nuclear Waste Sector)
Context & Mission: A semi-public entity near Dessel engaged in nuclear waste treatment and decommissioning seeks a hands-on Technical Expert in industrial automation and safety systems. Operating within a safety-driven and highly regulated environment, you will ensure technical excellence and compliance in support of nuclear waste processing and long-term storage.
- Lead mono-disciplinary industrial projects related to automation, instrumentation, and safety—from design through execution and commissioning.
- Draft, review, and maintain engineering specifications, datasheets, and technical documentation for new and existing installations.
- Provide expertise on automation solutions, instrumentation, and integration of advanced safety systems for radioactive waste facilities.
- Participate in technical risk analyses, contribute to safety evaluations, and provide input on installation criticality and long-term operability.
- Monitor and validate contractor/supplier work, ensuring strict compliance with quality standards, safety legislation, and internal guidelines.
- Propose improvements to enhance asset reliability, preventive maintenance, and optimize Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
- Assess, correct, and approve project documentation from external parties—plans, dossiers, and technical offers.
- Collaborate on safety file preparation, maintenance strategies, project budgeting, scheduling, and investment planning for long-term asset integrity.
- Ensure full compliance with nuclear safety and technical licensing requirements, covering as-built documentation and commissioning tests.
The position requires command of both English and Dutch. Daily work involves cross-functional collaboration within an environment emphasizing engineering excellence, public interest, and long-term operational safety.
We are looking for candidates who thrive in a technically demanding and highly regulated environment, and who draw motivation from contributing to solutions with a profound public and environmental impact. Success in this role requires a mix of strong technical expertise, a pragmatic mindset, and a deep commitment to safety and quality.
- Analytical yet hands-on: You combine extensive theoretical knowledge of industrial automation with a practical, problem-solving orientation. You enjoy tackling complex technical issues and are comfortable working on site to see your solutions implemented.
- Safety-oriented and meticulous: A strong intrinsic awareness of safety, compliance, and reliability is essential—you naturally put quality and risk management at the heart of every technical decision. Understanding and working within rigorous nuclear industry regulations feels like a rewarding responsibility rather than a constraint.
- Collaborative technical expert: You are respected as an internal reference point for automation, instrumentation, and safety systems. You willingly share your expertise and act as a supportive coach to peers and internal stakeholders in a multidisciplinary context.
- Structured communicator: You have proven skills in drafting clear engineering documentation, giving technical advice, and translating complex ideas for non-experts. Precision and clarity are evident in all your communications, both written and verbal.
- Continuous improver: You possess a keen eye for technical improvement and asset optimization. Identifying opportunities for preventive maintenance and long-term reliability is second nature to you.
- Proactive and quality-driven: You do not wait to be told about potential problems—instead, you actively monitor, propose solutions, and lead by example to ensure high technical and safety standards.
- Committed to collaboration: You value teamwork and demonstrate an open, respectful attitude towards colleagues, clients, and contractors. A healthy exchange of ideas, constructive feedback, and shared responsibility are principles you enact daily.
- Local presence: Living within a commutable distance to the Dessel area, you are ready to play an active role on site and engage directly with various stakeholders.
- Linguistic proficiency: Fluency in Dutch is essential to facilitate local communication and regulatory interactions. Strong command of English is also required to manage documentation and collaborate in an internationally influenced environment.
- Educational background: You hold a relevant master’s or bachelor’s degree in engineering (automation, industrial, process, or maintenance engineering) or bring equivalent experience as a senior technician with a proven track record in highly demanding industrial sectors.
If you are inspired by public-interest work, enjoy tackling challenging technical problems, and value a professional environment that prizes both individual input and collaborative success, we would like to meet you.
