Health & Safety Engineer
Role Overview
The position focuses on ensuring robust safety compliance across all operational activities, with a particular emphasis on the adoption and continuous improvement of health and safety practices. Integral to this role is the monitoring and implementation of Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, overseeing hazard identification, and conducting industrial hygiene risk assessments. Experience in railway, maritime, automotive, aviation, or heavy industry is a strong advantage, supporting the enforcement of safety standards in complex technical environments.
Main Functions and Responsibilities
- Oversee the implementation and maintenance of safety compliance processes in alignment with relevant legislation and internal policies.
- Develop, implement, and maintain ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems and ensure continual improvement.
- Conduct comprehensive industrial hygiene risk assessments to proactively manage health hazards within operational settings.
- Facilitate the use of risk assessment software for the systematic identification, evaluation, and mitigation of workplace hazards.
- Lead and coordinate health and safety audits, inspections, and corrective action tracking processes.
- Administer and optimize Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems (OHSMS), including documentation, reporting, and compliance reviews.
- Utilize Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) methodologies to maintain a safe working environment and mitigate potential risks.
- Ensure accuracy and currency of safety data sheet management, supporting hazardous materials handling and emergency procedures.
- Collaborate cross-functionally to develop safety engineering solutions and improve existing HSE management systems.
- Participate in training activities, communicate HSE requirements clearly in both English and Dutch, and contribute to a culture of continuous safety improvement.
Languages
- English: Advanced proficiency required for all workplace communication, documentation, and reporting.
- Dutch: Working proficiency necessary for team collaboration and understanding of local safety legislation.
Additional Information
- Familiarity or prior experience within railway, maritime, automotive, aviation, or heavy industry environments is considered a plus, broadening the scope for implementation of best practices in technically demanding sectors.

- Education and Experience: Holds a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and has established experience—at least three years—within a technical or industrial environment. Familiarity with railway operations is beneficial.
- Language Skills: Demonstrates full professional fluency in English. Proficiency in Dutch is considered a strong asset and reflects adaptability within a Belgian context.
- Technical Expertise: Brings strong hands-on experience applying ISO 45001 and other Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems, with thorough understanding of hazard identification, industrial hygiene risk assessment, and risk management principles. Experience with risk assessment software is highly valued.
- Personal Qualities: Combines strong organizational skills with clear and assertive communication, making complex information accessible to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike. Maintains composure under pressure, demonstrates sound judgment, and is committed to fostering a culture of continuous improvement and safety awareness.
- Collaborative Approach: Works seamlessly within multidisciplinary teams, actively contributes insights, and supports colleagues in creating robust and sustainable safety practices.
