Job description

Senior Legal Counsel – Strategic Advisory & Legal Affairs

  • Provide sound and independent legal advice with strong business insight on a wide range of matters, including general corporate, commercial, and public sector-related legal issues.
  • Act as a trusted legal partner to business units, supporting their strategic objectives by offering practical legal solutions and participating in relevant cross-functional initiatives and events.
  • Draft, review, and advise on internal manuals, policies, and communication materials to ensure consistency with applicable legal standards and strategic priorities.
  • Lead or support internal and external investigations where appropriate, and provide guidance on related legal risks and procedures.
  • Take the lead in drafting and amending internal frameworks, rules, or legislative documents as required by the organization.
  • Engage with various public and private sector entities to address strategic legal challenges, improve relationships, and deliver clear legal analyses, opinions, and recommendations.
  • Support knowledge management initiatives by developing and maintaining legal reference materials, templates, and best practices using internal platforms.
  • Lead litigation matters, including instructing and managing external counsel, ensuring efficient and cost-effective handling of legal proceedings.
  • Provide strategic legal support to peer institutions and partners, as required by senior leadership.
  • Mentor and train junior legal staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence within the legal team.
  • Conduct legal research and prepare papers or internal briefs for knowledge sharing or potential external publication.
  • Participate in industry events and conferences, representing the organization and contributing as a speaker or panelist when appropriate.
  • Deliver internal training sessions on legal topics to enhance awareness and mitigate legal risk across departments.
  • Manage external legal counsel, ensuring alignment with objectives and budget control.

Leadership & Departmental Strategy

  • Lead legal department initiatives to drive innovation, quality, and alignment with organizational values.
  • Ensure individual and team goals align with broader strategic objectives through effective performance management.
  • Support the recruitment, development, and motivation of team members, fostering leadership and high-performance culture.
  • Provide real-time feedback and coaching to staff, enabling their personal and professional development.
  • Contribute to the department’s operational planning and ensure effective execution of strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate across departments to ensure alignment of legal services with business needs and objectives.

Operational Excellence & Process Management

  • Propose and implement process improvements to optimize legal operations and internal workflows.
  • Ensure policies, procedures, and controls are regularly reviewed and updated in line with best practices.
  • Advise senior leadership on legal matters in support of organizational strategy and proactive decision-making.
  • Ensure timely and accurate preparation of legal reports and documentation to meet internal standards.
  • Contribute to the continuous enhancement of internal legal procedures, ensuring adherence to applicable standards and regulatory requirements.
Profile description

Required Profile

The ideal candidate is a seasoned legal professional with a minimum of 10 years of post-qualification experience, preferably gained within a multinational organization, government-related entity, or top-tier law firm. She/he should possess in-depth knowledge of corporate, commercial, and public law, with a strong ability to navigate complex legal and strategic matters. Proven experience in drafting legislation, policies, and high-level legal documents is essential, along with the ability to manage litigation and oversee external counsel. The candidate must demonstrate sound judgment, political sensitivity, and a high level of discretion. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with internal stakeholders and external partners. Experience mentoring junior legal staff and contributing to the development of a legal department’s strategic direction will be considered a strong asset. Fluency in English is required; Arabic is a plus.
